Exploring why Laughter is the Best Medicine
And how to get your laughter meds covered
You’ve heard the saying “Laughter is the best medicine”. Studies have shown that a good healthy belly laugh can trigger healthy physical and emotional changes in the body.
Strengthen your immune system and your heart: Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases infection-fighting antibodies, helping to improve resistance to disease. Laughter also improves blood vessel function, which can help protect you against a heart attack and stroke.
Boost your mood and diminish pain: Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins help us combat depression and anxiety, and can even temporarily relieve pain.
Relax, lower stress, and ease anxiety: A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension by increasing and then decreasing your heart rate and blood pressure, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. You can have a more restful sleep and improve your cognition.
Help you get in shape: It doesn’t replace going to the gym but laughing 10 to 15 minutes a day can burn approximately 40 calories, enough to lose three or four pounds over the course of a year.
Further studies have shown that while children may laugh as much as 400 times per day, adults tend to laugh only 15 times per day. So, how can you have more laughter in your life?
· Find the humor in life’s bad situations – including yourself – rather than dwelling on it.
· Surround yourself with things that make you laugh – a funny picture or humorous greeting card
· Share a laugh - after all, laughter is contagious!
