About the Show
25 years ago, newly minted Kumu Paddy Kauhane fulfilled her beloved Uncle’s wish and opened her own hula school – the Hālau Hula Ka’Uhane O Ka Pākīpika – in her hometown of Maple Ridge, BC. Today, her school has over a hundred students and is lovingly run by family members, longtime friends, students-turned-teachers, and volunteers, with Kumu Paddy and her Kumu, Blaine Kamalani Kia in O’ahu as a guiding star to ensure that we maintain Hawaii’s traditions in good faith.
This year’s ho’ike (show/exhibition), “Generations of Aloha”, aims to shine a light on our many teachers, both past and present. It is a love letter to all those who instilled in us the values of hard work, knowledge-seeking, respect, and aloha. It will tell the story of how the Hālau Hula Ka’Uhane O Ka Pākīpika came to be, and to whom we owe our thanks. With our dedicated students and Hawaiian musicians and dancers on loan from Kumu Blaine for this special occasion, audience members can expect many delightful dances to stir the heart and soul.
