An exhibit featuring artifacts and photographs from the Maple Ridge Museum’s archives exploring the changing role of fashion in 1920s Maple Ridge.
The pop of champagne, the clink of beads, the sheen of luxury fabrics. This is an evening out in the 1920s.Free of the sorrows of World War I, the Twenties were a time of exuberance and for living life to the fullest. A booming economy paired with technological advancements, lead to an indulgence in the finer things across all social classes. This changing social landscape influenced fashion and fed into the styles of the Art Deco movement. Simple silhouettes and geometric forms took the lead, accompanied by an explosion of eye-catching textiles and decorations. Radical changes occurred in women’s fashion reflecting the ‘New Women’ who could pursue a career and who had the right to vote. The changing role of women in society along with the new post-war world resulted in a style based in progressive modernity, luxury, and leisure. Although often associated with cosmopolitan cities, the fashions and styles of the 1920s left their mark on even our small town of Maple Ridge.
