Intricate Arrangements: Connotations in Collage

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 7, 2023 | 2:00 4:00 PM

Exhibition: January 7 – February 25, 2023

Intricate Arrangements: Connotations in Collage brings together two artists – Amy J. Dyck and Monique Motut-Firth – whose art practices utilize collage to create complex systems. In scientific terms, examples of a complex system include social networks, cities, the human brain, or even the entire universe.

The artworks in this exhibition represent complex internal and external systems. Amy collages figurative paintings together to depict the complexity of the bodily system and the human condition. Monique recombines images into new machines, vistas and systems of visual culture. Through a process of intricate arrangement, collected image fragments take on new meanings and deeper connotations.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Amy J. Dyck is a Langley-based artist who works primarily with self-portraiture and figurative imagery, aiming to depict her subjects as whole and complex beings. Using collage, oil paint, and mixed media, she pulls her references from anatomical studies, visual research, and personal experiences.

Monique Motut-Firth is a Vancouver-based multidisciplinary artist, writer, and arts educator working within the mediums of painting, paper, and digital media. Collecting and cutting magazines, books, catalogues and print ephemera, she uses ideas of motion and machine movement to construct new visual systems and possibilities.

FREE EVENT: Inside/Out Tour and Talk

Projecting Outwards: Imagining possible futures through collage

Guest speaker: Aimée Henny Brown, Assistant Professor in Foundations, 3D and Extended Media at University of the Fraser Valley

Saturday, February 4, 2:00 pm (limited seating, free of charge, registration required)

The talk explores how collage as an activity and medium not only digests and projects the current state of living, but also holds great potential as a world-building tool.  Collage - the act of combining disparate materials and images - is an apt response to the fractured moments we live within.  Can the history of collage and its possible futures become a strategy for imagining our own pathways outwards from this moment?

Inside/Out is a new series of talks and discussions that takes selected ACT Art Gallery exhibitions as the catalyst to explore larger social, cultural, and artistic issues. The series welcomes thinkers and writers from a wide variety of disciplines whose work gives broader context to exhibitions in the gallery.
